Family Business with an International focus

Family business with an international focus

Hazeldene’s Chicken Farm is taking its fresh chicken products to the world.

After many years of selling frozen products to Hong Kong, the Philippines, Solomon Islands and PNG, Hazeldene’s is now exporting fresh products to Hong Kong several times a week in order to meet growing demand.

Hazeldene’s is the biggest private employer in Bendigo with more than 700 employees and 400 contractors, most of whom come from the area. This family business, which produces chickens for market from breeding to plate, has been operating for more than 60 years. It processes up to 680,000 chickens a week at Lockwood, with breeding and rearing farms, a hatchery, growing farms and a processing plant across Central Victoria.

Hazeldene’s Executive Director John Hazeldene said the company, which prides itself on producing quality chickens and presenting them in innovative ways, was starting to reap the rewards of building relationships and contacts throughout Asia.

“The quality of our product is drawing plenty of attention and we are creating a highly sought after brand position in Hong Kong,” he said.

“While exports currently make up only a small portion of our overall sales, we are keen to expand this section of the business rapidly over the next five years.”

Mr Hazeldene said it was important for the company to do plenty of ground work now in building capabilities, gaining accreditations and finetuning logistics in preparation for the planned growth.

Recent Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) negotiated by the Federal Government have encouraged Hazeldene’s to pursue export markets more aggressively.

“These FTAs may open up areas that we have not had direct access to previously,” Mr Hazeldene said. “We are very optimistic they will lead to strong opportunities for growth.”

For “Australia has a reputation for growing high quality fresh food – we pride ourselves on producing the best chicken in the country so a growing export market will enhance both our and Australia’s reputation.”

Lockwood Primary School students take on the RACV Energy Breakthrough Challenge

All the team at Hazeldenes are behind a group of Grade 6 students from Lockwood Primary School who are currently seeing a years worth of work come to fruition on the track at Maryborough as they participate in the 2015 RACV Energy Breakthrough Challenge.

The entire school community have watched these students grow throughout the year and develop into a really close group, who positively encourage and support each other every single day.

The years work is culminating this weekend in Maryborough where the students will spend 2 nights and three days camping behind the pits at the track as part of the event.  Not only do their vehicles have to pass strict scrutineering process for both design and construction but they students them selves are taking part in a fourteen hour ride during Friday and Saturday.

What an amazing effort from the students and the support crew of teachers and parents involved in the project.

Hazeldene’s presents to Senate Inquiry

Today Hazeldene’s voluntarily presented at the public hearing of a Senate inquiry into the impact of Australia’s temporary work visa programs on the Australian labor market and on temporary work visa holders.  Hazeldene’s welcomed the opportunity to engage with the Federal Government via the Senate Inquiry on such an important component of strengthening and sustaining Australia’s job market.

Contrary to claims by Federal Member for Bendigo, Lisa Chester Hazeldene’s is not increasingly using temporary work visa workers to fill shifts.  Over the last five years Hazeldene’s has experienced substantial growth generating a 50 percent increase in employment with job generation predominantly from the Bendigo and surrounding region.  Hazeldene’s is one of regional Victoria’s largest private employers currently employing 720 people directly and more than 670 contractors.

While we do not use the Seasonal Worker Program we do have seasonal demand for our products and we manage that by engaging local staff on a casual basis over this period. We find that process works well for local job seekers and meets the needs of our operations.

Hazeldene’s also works in partnership with reputable contracting companies who provide locally based contract staff, the majority of whom are local, for a broad range of tasks including plumbing, electrical and equipment maintenance, cleaning, security, equipment hire, chicken boning and packing.

Hazeldene’s is committed to its employees and values the contribution that staff from a broad range of culturally diverse backgrounds makes to the long-term viability of our operation.

Righteous Pups Gala raises $80,000

Saturday Nights Gala Auction Night for Righteous Pups was a huge success, raising more than $80,000 to help train Autism Assistance Dogs for children with high spectrum autism.

Sponsored by Hazeldene’s, WIN and Harley Central Bendigo, the Gala brought out the best in the Bendigo community, with many people digging deep.

“We were ecstatic to achieve such a fantastic result” said Hazeldene’s Brand Manager and event organiser, Michelle Daniel. “Hazeldene’s would particularly like to extend thanks to Adam Poyser of Poyser Motors who was the winning bidder on the Harley Davidson motorbike at $14,250 and promptly donated the bike back into the auction. Poysers effectively made a $14,000 donation to Righteous Pups and that really set the tone of generosity for the night” she said.

Second time around, Steve Robertson was the winning bidder of the Harley Davidson at $14,000, but added a very generous donation when making out his cheque to Righteous Pups.

Dick Hazeldene paid $10,000 to sponsor and name a 7 week old Righteous Puppy who stole hearts, making an appearance on the night.

The audience were enraptured by some very special stories of recipients of Righteous Pups who attended, really showing the difference an assistance dog makes to families living with autism.

John Lingard sang beautifully, and rose to the challenge when WIN’s Scott Hosking offered to make a further donation for another song late in the night.

Founder and Managing Director of Righteous Pups, Joanne Baker was blown away with the result. “We’ve run fundraisers before, but this really took it to a whole new level for us, and we are absolutely thrilled with the result, its just brilliant” she said at the end of the night, almost speechless.

The evening would not have been possible without the donations from many businesses for auction, and the many people who bid at auction. Hazeldene’s and Righteous Pups would like to thank everybody that contributed to the night’s success.

Supplies delivered for Foodshare

When Foodshare’s Fay Barrett put the call out last month for assistance with collections of donated products for Foodshare, the response was immense. Last week that assistance materialised with Hazeldene’s delivering their first semi-trailer load of donated products to Foodshare’s headquarters in Bendigo. The 14 pallets of necessities including nappies, baby bottles, talcum powder, change mats, shampoo, toothbrushes and toothpaste will make it to those who need it in our local community.

“The difference that this will make to Central Victoria will be incredible” says Fay Barrett, elated to be able to bring this plan to fruition. “For a struggling young mother trying to educate herself and pay for these items, it can all just become too overwhelming”.

Hazeldene’s Marketing Manager Tony Hill was happy to help. “As soon as we realised there was a need for assistance, we offered our transport vehicles to help out. It’s great to see that those products can get to families that really need them. ”

Hazeldene’s has also donated 22,000kg of chicken products to Foodshare to date, with a consistent supply of around 1500kg per month and will now also assist with deliveries as required.
