Biosecurity

REARER TRANSFER, SPENT HEN DEPOPULATION, CLEANOUT CREWS AND DRIVERS & FEED DELIVERIES

The aim of biosecurity is to protect poultry from disease causing agents or other contaminants that may be of public health significance.

It is the responsibility of all employees and contractors of HAZELDENE'S to ensure that all procedures related to the husbandry and welfare of poultry do not compromise current biosecurity measures. People involved in the regular servicing, cleanout and wash down, vaccination, feed deliveries, manufacture and transfer of poultry need to be particularly careful to avoid the spread of potential disease pathogens between flocks within the company and between different poultry operations.

The following biosecurity guidelines are to be strictly adhered to within HAZELDENE'S operations:
  • All necessary documentation associated with bird, feed and personnel movements must be completed and forwarded as required. This is to ensure traceability of bird and personnel movements.
  • Drivers and all personnel should have showered after the previous farm visitations and commence the next scheduled workday with clean clothing.
  • Vehicular movements onto the farm are to be minimised. Transport vehicles responsible for the removal of dead birds should not enter the property. All other vehicles, including feed trucks are to be assessed for risk and treated accordingly. This may involve the sanitising of wheel arches etc. All drivers should restrict their movements to immediately around the vehicle and use either disposable over boots or sanitised footwear (e.g. gumboots).
  • All footwear should be cleaned and sanitised after completion of the days activities in preparation for the next scheduled farm visitation.
  • No association with or ownership of any type of domestic poultry, especially water fowl.
  • Detailed attention should be paid to the floors of vehicles to ensure that they are cleaned and sanitised at the end of each days activity.
  • All equipment used on farm should be washed and sanitised before utilised on any other farm.
  • No poultry are to be transferred between farms without prior consent of Hazeldene's management
  • All farms are to have a secure entrance gate with POULTRY FARM BIOSECURITY signage.
  • When specified by Hazeldene's Farming Manager specific directions should be followed. This may be in the case of partial farm depopulation, movement of “clean” livestock, disease situations, government specified control areas or other enforced regulatory acts.
Where personnel are uncertain of any biosecurity issues or identify potential biosecurity failures it is requested that HAZELDENE'S management be notified.

Any breach of the above biosecurity guidelines by personal will be considered as a breach of employment or contractual conditions.

POULTRY FARM BIOSECURITY

The primary aim of biosecurity is to protect poultry from disease causing agents or other contaminants that may be of public health significance.

It is the responsibility of all employees and contractors of HAZELDENE'S to ensure that all procedures related to the husbandry and welfare of poultry do not compromise current biosecurity measures. People involved in the regular servicing, vaccination and transfer of poultry need to be particularly careful to avoid the spread of potential disease pathogens between flocks within the company and between different poultry operations.

The following biosecurity guidelines are to be strictly adhered to within Hazeldene's operations:
  • A minimum period of 24 hours between contact with different poultry flocks within Hazeldene's .
  • A minimum period of 48 hours between contact with different poultry operations and only after approval of Hazeldene's management
  • No association with or ownership of any type of domestic poultry, especially water fowl.
  • All employees and contractors must be freshly showered (either from home or at the farm depending on facilitation), wear a change of clothing and sanitised footwear before entering a poultry farm. Clean on site protective clothing should be worn.
  • Detailed attention should be paid to the floors of vehicles to ensure that they are cleaned and sanitised after visiting a poultry farm. This is assisted by having either washable footwear or protective disposable overboots that are worn on farm and cleaned or discarded before returning to the vehicle.
  • All equipment used on farm should be washed and sanitised before leaving the farm. The equipment should be sanitised for the second time before entering the next farm. This includes such items as weigh scales, transfer crates, vaccination and beak trimming equipment.
  • No poultry are to be transferred between farms without prior consent of the Farming Manager.
  • Footbaths or a suitable footwear scrub area is to be used at the entrance of the property and then again at the entrance to each shed.
  • A continual control program of rodent baiting and wild bird exclusion is to be implemented and monitored.
  • Vehicular movements onto the farm are to be minimised. Transport vehicles responsible for the removal of dead birds should not enter the property. All other vehicles, including feed trucks are to be assessed for risk and treated accordingly. This may involve the sanitising of wheel arches etc. All drivers should restrict their movements to immediately around the vehicle and use either disposable overboots or sanitised footwear (e.g. gumboots).
  • All farms are to have a secure entrance gate with POULTRY FARM BIOSECURITY signage.
Where personnel are uncertain of any biosecurity issues or identify potential biosecurity failures it is requested that HAZELDENE'S  management be notified.

It is critical to understand that any compromise in biosecurity, even for short periods or for reasons of short term management gains can result in long term and extensive disease problems that will negatively impact on the operations of HAZELDENE'S and its employees and contractors.
